White Chickens

“White Chickens” by Todd Van Buskirk. Essentially, this novel is a love letter to “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams. The novel is an all encompassing embrace of the experience of thinking about this poem, of reading it, of wondering about it, and of loving it. The author first encountered “The Red Wheelbarrow” in his senior year at high school. In his literary class, Van Buskirk was given an assignment to find a poem on which to write a small essay. Van Buskirk accidently found “The Red Wheelbarrow” in a poetry anthology, and used it for his essay because it was so simple and short. The author remembered the poem in 2005 during a poetry class, in which he again wrote a paragraph about it.

“The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams. Essentially, this free verse poem is a sentence taken from prose and broken into tiny batches of stanzas. Its simplicity is its strength. This little poem’s only purpose is to describe a red wheelbarrow and its immediate surroundings. The only stanza that is not descriptive is the first: “so much depends upon.” This phrase presents us with a philosophical inquiry that prepares us to receive the red wheelbarrow. This phrase is the little overture that starts the drama. Apparently, there is no concrete meaning or story to consider here. The only event the reader experiences is the receiving of this modest image, and all the visual and emotional associations that follow upon this meditation. Yet, this small meditation has the weight of a novel.
